I have actually never scratched a stone when using pliers, the scratching issues that I have had when using pliers happen on the backs of closed back settings, where the metal pliers can damage the finish of the setting. It can happen that you may experience fit issues when working with vintage rhinestones in contemporary settings. If a customer is purchasing both settings and rhinestones from Bumbershoot Supplies, we are always happy to check fit for you, just send us a message :)

Sharon Bumbershoot Designs and Supplieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06024905385792751578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7668013170545944569.post-49863486691803445322014-12-02T10:18:13.272-08:002014-12-02T10:18:13.272-08:00Hi Sharon, I tend you use a wooden flat 'lolly...Hi Sharon, I tend you use a wooden flat 'lolly' (UK term!) ice cream? stick to press the prongs down; it's gentler than pliers and doesn't scratch the stone. Once in position, the pliers can be used to tighten them down if necessary.
The toughest ones I find are the oval ones, they just don't seem to sit in the modern setting.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7668013170545944569.post-27409769372177323882013-07-08T20:02:36.473-07:002013-07-08T20:02:36.473-07:00Hi there,

Sometimes bending prongs in just a touch before working with the stone can also help a bit. Also it can help to try both open and closed back settings to see which you like best. Good luck!

SharonBumbershoot Designs and Supplieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06024905385792751578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7668013170545944569.post-59731897443466193922013-07-08T10:16:19.794-07:002013-07-08T10:16:19.794-07:00I wonder, how are you able to set navettes, pears ...I wonder, how are you able to set navettes, pears and such? It is designed for folks working with specialty wire, so pliers don't mar the wire. You dip your pliers in the solution and it applies a (removable) plastic coating. I haven't tried it yet, but I wonder if it might also work for this purpose. ~SharonBumbershoot Designs and Supplieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06024905385792751578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7668013170545944569.post-45672333627794874652012-09-10T06:51:12.555-07:002012-09-10T06:51:12.555-07:00I'm thinking that maybe covering your pliers w...I'm thinking that maybe covering your pliers with the blue painter's tape would help eliminate scratching and then you wouldn't have to use cotton and you could see the stone/settings more easily. I sometimes use Krylon to preserve vintage glass pearls too, and I've posted about that in the tutorials section.
