Look What I Found. Vintage Japanese Handpainted Glass Bird Cabochon

This arrived in the mail today.  It is breathtaking. It is a vintage Japanese glass cabochon, with 2 tiny birds perched on flowering branches, all handpainted with incredible detail. It is quite dirty. I used a cotton swab dampened with water to clean around the paint, but after working with it, my guess is that the paint is pretty robust, so I'll clean a bit more agressively in the next pass.

The backs of these cabochons were originally foiled in red, green and yellow, so the colors would have shown behind the birds like a glowing rainbow.  You can catch glimpses of that in this cabochon, but the foil is seriously damaged and is easily removed. The glass is frosted, so I think that if the foil is removed, the cabochon will still be quite beautiful, just a bit different from how it was originally intended to look.

One of the features of this cabochon that leaves me awestruck is the size. This cab is about 17mm or 5/8 inch long. The only word I seem to be able to come up with to describe the degree of detail, artistry and craftsmanship is "breathtaking".

Look What I Found. New Fabric by Tracie Lyn Huskamp of The Red Door Studio

I am pretty excited about the new fabric designs by
Tracie Lynn Huskamp of the Red Door Studio.

I am fortunate to own 2 originals by Tracie: a beautiful goldfinch pin cushion, shown in this blog post, and this wee chickadee painted on muslin shown above and below.

When I heard Tracie had available fabric created using her original designs, I headed right over to her Etsy shop to get me some!

Nature is so much to me, an inspiration, a comfort, a place to heal, a continual source of wonder and beauty and joy.

I love Tracie's work because it reflects how I feel about the magical beauty of the natural world.

I'd love to take a class from her one day, or even just to meet her so I could tell her in person how much I love her art.

I don't know yet what I will do with these wonderful fabrics, right now I am just enjoying them.

New at Bumbershoot Supplies. Vintage Japanese Hand Painted Flower Cabochons

New this week at Bumbershoot Supplies, some already arrived and more to come... Several new vintage Japanese flower cabochons have been listed in the shop and more are coming soon.  These sweet plastic embellishments were made in Japan many decades ago.  Our selection dates to 1950's to 1960's Japan and includes a wide variety of flowers and birds, most of them hand painted.  Just think of that - hand painted.  Pretty amazing.

These are wonderful embellishments for mixed media, fibre and paper arts as well as for jewelry applications.  You will find our selection at Bumbershoot Supplies in the "vintage plastic cabochons" section of the shop.  Feel free to contact me with any questions or requests.

Three Muses. Bye Bye Blackbird.

This is my entry for the Three Muses Challenge this week: Bye, bye blackbird.  So, no matter how hard I tried to get these blackbirds to come out black, they came out white. Think of it as a photographic negative... albino blackbirds.  Just can't argue with the muse.  Did you know there really are albino blackbirds?  There are lots of interesting pictures and discussions on UK birding sites, for example, here.  Anyway, the major inspiration for the piece was the gorgeous Beatles song, which is now running like a tape in my head, over and over... here's a link to Paul McCartney performing it.

For this ATC, I've used vintage sheet music, gesso'd, stamped, birds perched on the music as if it is a branch, vintage mother of pearl sequins, stamped with letter stamps.

To get ideas for this theme, my family did some brainstorming and my daughter Emma did some research at www.poets.org. She found this beautiful piece by Wallace Stevens.  I thought I would share it with you - there is so much contained within it to appreciate and work with.  Parts of this poem also made their way into my ATC. In the US, April is National Poetry Month!

Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird
Wallace Stevens

I
Among twenty snowy mountains,
The only moving thing
Was the eye of the blackbird.

II
I was of three minds,
Like a tree
In which there are three blackbirds.

III
The blackbird whirled in the autumn winds.
It was a small part of the pantomime.

IV
A man and a woman
Are one.
A man and a woman and a blackbird
Are one.

V
I do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of inflections
Or the beauty of innuendoes,
The blackbird whistling
Or just after.

VI
Icicles filled the long window
With barbaric glass.
The shadow of the blackbird
Crossed it, to and fro.
The mood
Traced in the shadow
An indecipherable cause.

VII
O thin men of Haddam,
Why do you imagine golden birds?
Do you not see how the blackbird
Walks around the feet
Of the women about you?

VIII
I know noble accents
And lucid, inescapable rhythms;
But I know, too,
That the blackbird is involved
In what I know.

IX
When the blackbird flew out of sight,
It marked the edge
Of one of many circles.

X
At the sight of blackbirds
Flying in a green light,
Even the bawds of euphony
Would cry out sharply.

XI
He rode over Connecticut
In a glass coach.
Once, a fear pierced him,
In that he mistook
The shadow of his equipage
For blackbirds.

XII
The river is moving.
The blackbird must be flying.

XIII
It was evening all afternoon.
It was snowing
And it was going to snow.
The blackbird sat
In the cedar-limbs.

Monday in Seattle. Picture and Quote for the Week.

(spectacular bird, Woodland Park Zoo)

Be as a bird perched on a frail branch that she feels bending beneath her,
still she sings away all the same, knowing she has wings.

Soarin', flyin'

As I do several times a week, I walked at Discovery Park this morning. Discovery is a true natural jewel in the Seattle park system, and I treasure my time spent there. But today was very, very special. As I came out of the woods, heading for the bluff and that magnificent view of Puget Sound, I saw two eagles. You can regularly see eagles surfing the air currents that come in from the water, and it is always a thrill to see those magnificent birds. But today they were so low, just above the tree tops and very close to the edge of the bluff, that I thought for sure I could reach up and pluck them out of the sky. They were not too big, and beautifully sleek. What a breathtaking experience to be so close to these magnificent creatures, in flight yet! Eventually one landed in the top of a nearby tree, and I stood for a while, just to watch. Sadly, I did not have my camera with me (I promise never again to go to Discovery Park without my camera). But I wanted to write about this because I don't want to forget how privileged and inspired I felt to have had this experience today.
The photo above was taken at Discovery Park several days ago and the eagles I saw today were surfing right above the tree to the right of the picture. Just imagine that!
